Road Trip Essentials: Accessories Worth Packing Before You Go

Before a longer drive, work out where your luggage, passenger items and charging cables will go. You do not need a car full of new accessories; start with the gaps in your current setup.

Plan the cabin around the people travelling

Keep the items passengers use together in an accessible place. Check that a backseat organizer fits the seat and its attachment points, and that it does not obstruct seat belts or adjustments. Compare the organizer's dimensions with the available space before ordering.

Check the phone and power setup

If you use a phone for navigation, check the holder's mounting method and compatibility with your phone and case. Follow the mounting instructions and local rules, keep the view and controls clear, and set up your route before driving.

For powered accessories, check the required connection and what is included in the box. A USB connector alone does not tell you whether a charger or accessory is compatible.

Leave useful space in the trunk

A trunk organizer can separate smaller belongings and shopping bags. Measure its footprint against your luggage space and check whether it folds when not in use. Secure luggage and heavier cargo according to your vehicle manufacturer's instructions; an organizer is not a cargo restraint.

Try the arrangement before departure

Fit accessories and load your usual bags ahead of time. It is easier to adjust a strap or move an organizer before everyone is ready to leave.
